Before his polarizing appearance on “Saturday Night Live” and prior to his forgettable stint with the Kansas City Chiefs, Joe Montana was a force of nature. As the sure-handed quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers, Montana led his team to four Super Bowl victories. He earned MVP awards in three of those four appearances. In short, no other quarterback was as adept at finding ways to win.

Montana has often been compared to John Elway – not necessarily in terms of physical ability, but rather because of both players’ propensity to engineer come-from-behind wins. Like a Tom Brady of old, Montana was noted for his ability to remain cool and collected in the pocket. Like many legends of the pro game, his name and number are forever immortalized in the form of an NFL throwback jersey.
